If you own, run or restore classic vehicles I am sure you will find one of these documents very useful, they are not just a service data sheet, they are normally an eight page A4 booklet, packed with information to assist a mechanic of the time to carry out work ranging from servicing to major engine and gearbox rebuilds, the thing to remember is that they were written for professional trades people, they are not a DIY guide.
Motor Trader Magazine started publishing them in the mid thirties as part of their magazine, the very early ones are three or four separate sheets which were actually cut out of the magazine itself, they soon developed into the more common eight side booklet which varies slightly in size but is close to A4, though there were some produced on a folded A2 sheet which allowed for larger drawings.
